European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS)

Contact: Lucia Brocato

Founded in 1991, the ESCRS is Europe’s leading organisation for cataract and refractive surgeons. The Society, which fulfils a worldwide leadership role in its area of specialisation, has over 6,600 members from over 90 countries. The ESCRS offers a unique forum for discussion, leadership and learning which ensures that international expertise is shared by ophthalmologists all over Europe.

The business model which ESCRS puts into practice is the sharing of ideas, research and experience not only between its European members but colleagues in the wider world of ophthalmology. ESCRS coordinates and manages several committees, including those dealing with research, cornea, refractive, quality management, quality of life and finance. From its office of 30 staff in Dublin, Ireland ESCRS organises two annual conferences and numerous education programmes. It publishes a news magazine that is circulated to 40,000 ophthalmic surgeons worldwide and in partnership with the American sub-specialty Society publishes a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

In addition ESCRS provides funding for clinical research trials in ophthalmology.

The consortium of the project consists of eight partners: the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), European Society of Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease Specialists (EuCornea), Fondazione Banca degli Occhi del Veneto Onlus (FBOV) & European Eye Bank Association (EEBA), NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), University of Maastricht (MU), Nederlandse Transplantatie Stichting (NTS) and Blekinge Lans Landsting (LTBlekinge).
